Self Care During Difficult Times
Recently, it seems that rarely a day goes by when we’re not confronted with unwelcomed news. Whether it is related to fears of an economic slow down or the reality of higher costs at both the pump and grocery store, we all feel the increasing pressure to tighten our belts, even when there’s not much more we feel we can do to conserve. As we experience increasing stress, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, over-commercialization, financial worry and recovery from the holiday season, it is not uncommon to just want to withdraw from the world and hope it will all just pass. Unfortunately, even if this were possible, it’s highly unlikely and unproductive. Let us look at some ways to appropriately indulge and take care of ourselves during difficult times.
The following are a few key things we can do to overcome obstacles and increase our sense of well-being and self-care.
• Set Realistic Daily Goals
• Mental Rehearsal (Visualization) of Stressful Situations to Improve Our Coping
• Positive Self-Talk
• Don’t Over Extend; Pace Yourself
• Surround Yourself with Positive, Supportive & Caring People
• Make Time for Yourself
• Indulge in Activities You Enjoy
• Live in the Present, Don’t Catastrophize!
• Watch Your Budget & Don’t Over Spend
• Limit Your Drinking (as excessive use will increase feelings of depression)
• Consult with a Therapist if Difficulties Continue or Impair Functioning
