Be The Reason Someone Smiles Today

“Kindness is more than deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another person.”- Plato, Philosopher

When our children were very young, I hung a sign in our home stating “Be Sure Brain Is In Gear Before Engaging Mouth”.  Not exactly subtle, but nevertheless a very good lesson/reminder back then for all of us to think prior to speaking or writing something we might later regret.  Today, of course, I would revise those original two modes of communication to include modern technology and social media!  Words, no matter how they are delivered, cannot be taken back.  They can just as readily lift us up, be encouraging and supportive, as they can tear us down, cutting us deep to our core and never forgotten.  Our words-our choice as to exactly what message we wish to deliver!

Everyone we meet has a story.  No one gets through life without enduring struggles and challenges. Yet, the one thing that connects all humanity is that we have each felt the same feelings no matter how our life experiences or our perceptions of them have differed.  We can all remember, I am certain, a time, or at the very least a moment, when we felt mad, sad, scared or glad.  Recognizing and remembering this can help each of us choose to err on the side of compassion and empathy when dealing with one another!

Kindness by its very definition is a virtue.  It is marked by a pleasant disposition and concern for others.  It may also refer to traits of honesty, loyalty, helpfulness and common courtesy.  Kindness and positivity can replace rudeness and negativity! Such an attitudinal shift would clearly foster greater respect and understanding within our families, our friendships, and eventually even our communities.  We always have the power to choose how we treat others.  Just for today perhaps we will all give kindness a chance!!
